We all know that a sinusoidally driven system will respond both at the frequency of the drive and at harmonics of the driving frequency. Physicists are now becoming accustomed to the notion that a driven system can also respond at subharmonics of the driving frequency. This is not a recent discovery. Over 150 years ago Michael Faraday I observed a system responding at one half the frequency of the drive. Electrical engineers have been aware for some time of the possibility of subharmonic generation in certain amplifier circuits. 2 Furthermore there are some nice examples of simple mechanical systems with subharmonic response. 3
